As someone who lives in Fukuoka, this is the question I hear from visitors more than any other. The short answer: the JR Kyushu Rail Pass is usually not worth buying for a trip focused on Fukuoka, Dazaifu, Yanagawa and Itoshima. It can pay off for a Kagoshima round trip, for several long JR journeys in northern Kyushu, or for a fast multi-city circuit. Even then, the saving is often smaller than it first appears, because JR Kyushu also sells discounted web tickets.
So let us do the arithmetic instead of the marketing, using both regular fares and the web fares.
Temporary service alert, checked 19 August 2026: Following the 2026 Kumamoto earthquake, Kyushu Shinkansen service remains suspended from Kumamoto to Shin-Minamata, and JR Kyushu says a restart during August is difficult. Service from Shin-Minamata to Kagoshima-Chuo resumed on 7 August. Check the live operating page before planning travel toward Kagoshima.
JR Kyushu Rail Pass prices
There are three area versions. Each pass is valid for consecutive calendar dates, not a flexible number of 24-hour periods. The lower official online prices below are currently advertised as limited-time prices, so recheck them before buying.
| Pass | Validity | JR Kyushu online | Station or agency | Free reservations after pickup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All Kyushu | 3 days | ¥21,000 | ¥22,000 | Unlimited |
| All Kyushu | 5 days | ¥23,000 | ¥24,000 | Unlimited |
| All Kyushu | 7 days | ¥25,000 | ¥26,000 | Unlimited |
| Northern Kyushu | 3 days | ¥14,000 | ¥15,000 | Up to 6 |
| Northern Kyushu | 5 days | ¥16,000 | ¥17,000 | Up to 6 |
| Southern Kyushu | 3 days | ¥11,000 | ¥12,000 | Up to 6 |
Children aged 6 to 11 pay half the corresponding adult price. Eligibility is limited to non-Japanese visitors who live outside Japan and enter for sightseeing with Temporary Visitor status. Carry the qualifying passport while using the pass.

What the pass does not cover around Fukuoka
The most important limits are not hidden fees. They simply come from riding a different transport operator.
Dazaifu and Yanagawa. The usual train routes from central Fukuoka are run by Nishitetsu, not JR. The current adult one-way fare from Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) is ¥480 to Dazaifu and ¥960 to Nishitetsu Yanagawa. Neither ride is covered by a JR Kyushu Rail Pass.
Fukuoka Airport, Hakata and Tenjin. The airport trip is on the Fukuoka City Subway. Budget ¥260 one way from the airport to Hakata or Tenjin. The JR pass does not cover the subway.
Itoshima. A through train can cross two operators without a transfer. The subway section as far as Meinohama is not covered, while the JR Chikuhi Line west of Meinohama is covered. Coastal spots such as Futamigaura and Keya may also need a bus, car or bicycle.
The Hakata–Kokura Shinkansen. The Sanyo Shinkansen on this section is run by JR West and is excluded. All Kyushu and Northern Kyushu pass holders can instead use covered JR Kyushu conventional trains, including eligible Sonic limited express services, and continue from Kokura to Mojiko on a conventional JR train.
Use both regular fares and web fares in your calculation
The regular adult one-way ordinary reserved-seat fares below are useful benchmarks for normal-season travel. The discounted web fares are official JR Kyushu products, but they can have limited seat inventory and stricter rules for changes or stopovers. All figures checked on 19 August 2026, and they do change, so confirm before purchase.
| Route from Hakata | Regular fare | Current JR Kyushu web fare example |
|---|---|---|
| Nagasaki | ¥6,490 | ¥4,500 |
| Beppu | ¥6,910 | ¥3,500 |
| Kumamoto | ¥5,840 | ¥5,310 |
| Kagoshima-Chuo | ¥11,950 | ¥11,420 |
Scenario 1: Fukuoka with Dazaifu, Yanagawa and Itoshima
Suppose you stay in Fukuoka and take separate day trips to Dazaifu, Yanagawa and Itoshima. Dazaifu and Yanagawa use Nishitetsu. An Itoshima trip may combine the subway, the JR Chikuhi Line and a local bus.
Verdict: skip the JR Kyushu Rail Pass. Pay as you go with an IC card and buy destination-specific tickets when useful. The conclusion changes only if you add longer JR trips, such as Kitakyushu or other places outside the immediate Fukuoka area.
Scenario 2: Fukuoka and Nagasaki over 3 days
A regular reserved-seat round trip is ¥12,980. That is ¥1,020 below the ¥14,000 online Northern Kyushu Pass. Two current Kamome Net Tickets total ¥9,000, subject to product conditions and availability.
Verdict: the pass does not pay off for a Nagasaki round trip alone. Consider the Northern Kyushu Pass only if you will add enough covered JR travel during the same three consecutive dates.
Scenario 3: Fukuoka and Kagoshima over 3 days
A regular reserved-seat round trip is ¥23,900. Two current Kyushu Net Tickets total ¥22,840. The online All Kyushu 3-day Pass is ¥21,000.
Verdict: a narrow win for the pass. The saving is ¥2,900 against regular fares or ¥1,840 against the current web-ticket example. The pass becomes more useful if you add another covered ride, but the margin is not large enough to ignore schedule flexibility or the current service disruption.
Scenario 4: Nagasaki and Beppu as two trips over 5 days
Regular reserved-seat round trips total ¥26,800. Against that figure, the ¥16,000 online Northern Kyushu 5-day Pass saves ¥10,800. However, two current Kamome Net Tickets plus two Kyushu Net Tickets also total ¥16,000.
Verdict: compare convenience, not only the headline saving. The pass is excellent value against full regular fares, but it is tied with the current discounted-ticket examples. Choose the pass if you want additional covered rides or more freedom to change the route. Choose separate web tickets if the itinerary is fixed and their conditions work for you.
Scenario 5: a five-city Kyushu circuit
For normal operations, consider Hakata → Kumamoto → Kagoshima-Chuo → Miyazaki → Oita → Hakata. Regular reserved-seat fares total about ¥33,350. Current JR Kyushu web-ticket examples for the same five legs total about ¥25,670. The online All Kyushu Pass costs ¥23,000 for five days or ¥25,000 for seven days.
Verdict: useful, but not automatically a huge saving. Against regular fares, the pass saves ¥10,350 over five days. Against the current discounted-ticket examples, the difference is about ¥2,670 for a five-day pass and only ¥670 for a seven-day pass. The pass still offers value through extra rides and simpler changes, but compare your real dates and route before buying.
Note that this circuit is not workable in its normal form on the fact-check date because of the Kumamoto–Shin-Minamata suspension.
Seat reservations: valuable, but not a seat guarantee
After collecting the pass in Kyushu, All Kyushu pass holders can make unlimited ordinary reserved-seat bookings at JR Kyushu ticket offices or eligible reserved-seat machines. Northern and Southern pass holders receive up to six. A connected Relay Kamome and Kamome booking counts as one reservation.
Advance reservations made through the JR Kyushu Rail Pass Online Booking service before pickup are a separate, paid system. They currently cost ¥1,500 per Design and Story sightseeing-train section, or ¥1,000 per Shinkansen, regular limited express or rapid-train section. These paid reservations do not use the six-booking allowance.
Yufuin no Mori, Aso Boy! and Ibusuki no Tamatebako are all-reserved trains. A valid pass covers an eligible journey, but it does not guarantee an available seat. JR Kyushu itself warns that Yufuin no Mori can be fully booked day after day, so reserve early when a sightseeing train is important to your plan.
Alternatives worth checking
JR KYUSHU MOBILE PASS, FUKUOKA WIDE Area. The current product is the JR KYUSHU MOBILE PASS (FUKUOKA WIDE Area), not the older Fukuoka Wide Rail Pass that ended sales in 2024. It costs ¥3,500 for two consecutive dates and covers local and rapid trains plus non-reserved limited express seats inside its map. It excludes Shinkansen services, subways, buses and Nishitetsu. It can make sense for longer conventional-JR travel from a Fukuoka base, especially a limited express trip toward Kokura combined with another covered journey. It is not a general city transport pass.
The SUNQ Pass covers participating highway buses, local buses and selected ferries. It can be more practical than rail for Kurokawa Onsen and other places without convenient JR access. Current digital products range from ¥8,000 for the Northern Kyushu two-day pass to ¥15,000 for the All Kyushu four-day pass. Some routes require advance reservations, and the pass does not cover every bus or ferry. Unlike the JR Kyushu Rail Pass, it is also available to residents of Japan.
Separate JR tickets are often the best choice for one long round trip or a schedule with rest days separating excursions. Compare regular fares, official web fares and the relevant pass using the exact trains you expect to take.
How to buy and collect the pass
Buying through JR Kyushu Rail Pass Online Booking currently saves ¥1,000 per adult pass. You must collect the physical pass before boarding. Hakata Station handles All Kyushu and Northern Kyushu passes. The Fukuoka Airport JR Kyushu Rail Pass Exchange Counter also handles redemption for those two versions, but it is an exchange and online-pickup counter, not an on-site sales counter.
Bring the required passport and the purchase information. If you paid online, check the current pickup instructions of JR Kyushu for the physical payment card and documents required for everyone in the booking.

Final answer: is the JR Kyushu Rail Pass worth it?
Usually no for a Fukuoka-focused trip built around the city, Dazaifu, Yanagawa and Itoshima. Usually no for only one Nagasaki round trip. Sometimes yes for a Kagoshima round trip, although the margin can be modest. Potentially yes for several long JR trips during consecutive dates, especially when you value extra rides and route flexibility. And worth comparing carefully for a full Kyushu circuit, where it wins clearly against regular fares but the advantage can shrink sharply once official web tickets enter the picture.
The pass is a useful product for the right itinerary. The honest answer comes from comparing the exact area, consecutive dates, discounted tickets and trains you will actually use.
